About Jupiter Hell Classic

The classic DRL is getting its commercial Steam release with updated gameplay and Jupiter Hell-based expansion!

After over 11 years in hiatus ChaosForge resumes development on its original turn-based roguelike shooter, DRL. We're updating the game's mechanics, environments, content, graphics and changing the setting to match the one featured in its acclaimed remake - Jupiter Hell - and bringing the game to Steam players, as a fully-featured commercial spin-off/total-conversion, under the name Jupiter Hell Classic!

The original DRL remains free on the ChaosForge website and will continue to receive updates alongside the new Jupiter Hell Classic version. Jupiter Hell Classic is continuing development of the entire series, now spanning over 20 years.

What to expect from Jupiter Hell Classic:

  • Classic, unforgiving, top-down, grid-based roguelike gameplay
  • Fast and fluid ranged based tactical combat
  • Control via keyboard only, mouse + keyboard or gamepad
  • Diagonal movement along movement based tactics
  • Environmental destruction and interaction
  • 4 episodes, almost 200 items, 25+ enemies
  • 30+ crafting assemblies, 3 classes with 5 master traits each (subclasses)
  • Steam Workshop support for all your nostalgia modding needs!

The demake of a remake of a roguelike unmake of a famous 1993 FPS shooter.

Read that again, let it sink in. The lore might be a bit confusing at first, but it all makes sense.

First, there was that legendary hell-shooter from the '90s. Then, in 2002, came a turn-based fan project that reimagined that chaos as a roguelike - fast, brutal, and built for coffee breaks. And players saw that it was good. For 14 glorious years, it brought turn-based carnage to a devoted fanbase.

Then, in 2016, came the un-making. The hell-hordes of lawyers descended on the game and all that was left was three lettersD R L. Was it still good, though? Hell yeah. And then, in 2019, came Jupiter Hell. The modern(ish) remake. Still with us? Remake of the unmake.

The year is 2024, and it's sure as hell time for the story to go full-circle with another demake. Jupiter Hell Classic, the demake of the remake of the unmake of the 2002 legendary roguelike that proved fast-paced action belongs in a turn-based RPG.
